Mini Storage Tips:

What Size Storage Unit Do You Need?

Here are some general guidelines for common unit sizes.

5 x 10 – Can hold items from a studio or small 1 bedroom apartment

10 x 10 – Can hold items from a 1 or 2 bedroom apartment

10 x 20 – Can hold items from a 3 or 4 bedroom apartment of house.

10 x 30 – Can hold items from a 4 or 5 bedroom house and garage items.

One of the most important storage tips is to make sure your belongings are safe from pests. While our properties are maintained with pest control measures, it is possible for spiders, moths, ants and rodents to find their way into units and wreak havoc on your stuff. Cardboard boxes are the easiest for pests to invade, so if possible, store items inside sealed containers or plastic bins. A little-known tip to repel pests is by using dryer sheets. Place them in the corners of your unit and inside boxes. The smell will keep unwanted critters away while leaving your belongings smelling fresh. It’s recommended to replace the dryer sheets once a month.

When it comes to renting a storage unit, you’ll want to maximize your space. The smaller storage space you can use, the more money you’ll save. The best solution is to utilize vertical space. Stack your boxes on top of on one another until they reach the ceiling. If you’re worried about putting too much weight on bottom boxes, consider using a freestanding shelving unit or bookcase.

When packing for storage, you may not think to take extra precautions to protect your belongings as you would in the case of moving. After all, they’ll just be sitting in storage. However, you’ll be stacking boxes on top of each other and moving them around periodically as you dig through your unit. This increases the chance that something might break. Don’t take any chances. Pack your fragile items with bubble wrap to ensure they’re still intact when you want to use them.

One of the best self-storage tips and tricks is to label your boxes. Go one step further and write every item that’s in the box on a label. Instead of just “KITCHEN” write a list like “utensils, coffee cups, flatware and cereal bowls.” It may be months or years until you need to find these items again. This way, you’ll know exactly what’s in every box without having to open them up first.

Do you have a large table, TV stand or oddly shaped furniture piece going in your storage unit? This can take up a lot of precious area and makes it more difficult to fit other items around. Disassemble what you can and wrap the pieces together. Remember to keep all screws in a bag taped to the bundle. You’ll be able to save room in your storage unit and won’t have to worry about losing parts.

Store plush items and fabrics in vacuum sealed bags. This includes clothing as well as curtains, blankets, towels, rugs, bedding, and pillows. Not only will the vacuum sealed bags protect your belongings from moisture and pests, but it’ll help save space as well.

Unfortunately, not all large items can be disassembled for easier storage. Some items, like dressers, hutches, and garbage cans, have to stay intact. But that doesn’t mean you can’t take advantage of what they have to offer! Each of these items has plenty of empty space. Garbage cans, shelves, and drawers can be used to store fragile items to keep them extra safe.

Outdoor, ground floor storage units can be susceptible to the environmental elements. Cover the floor of your storage unit with canvas, tarp or plastic sheeting to keep moisture away from your belongings. You may also want to use wooden pallets or shelves to keep items a few inches off the ground.

You might be tempted to rush and transfer all of your items into the unit as quickly as possible. But we highly recommend that you create an aisle of open walking space, especially in larger storage units. Plan for one aisle going down the center of your unit with the container labels facing the aisle. You’ll be able to see all your belongings without having to jump over boxes or push things aside.

Make sure you have enough of the essential packing supplies to protect all your belongings. Here is a list of commonly used packing supplies. We sell packing and shipping supplies in the front office.

  • cardboard boxes
  • plastic storage bins
  • packing tape
  • packing paper
  • bubble wrap
  • plastic wrap
  • drop cloths
  • mattress bags
  • labels and markers

Are you storing leather furniture? You may not think about preparing that couch for long-term storage. However, you should take the proper steps to clean and preserve anything leather. Leather conditioner will do the trick. It’ll help ensure that your leather furniture and clothing comes out of storage looking good as new.

Everyone’s worst nightmare is to walk into their storage unit and find everything wet! While the facility takes the proper measures to ensure there’s no leaky roof, that doesn’t mean you’re out of the woods. Dishwashers and refrigerators can both hold water inside them. You’ll want to make sure you drain your dishwasher and defrost your refrigerator before you store these types of appliances. If you don’t, that water will end up leaking out eventually and can soak your boxes.
